This past weekend, my super dad brought 54 boxes of books. There is a plethora of all kinds ~ philosophy, memoirs/biographies, fiction, kid's books (which I'm unloading at 10 for $1), faith-based, science and lots of Frommer travel books. We also have over 100 VHS tapes, each $2.

If I don't have a book that you're looking for, let me know and if I can get it, there's a $3 charge for paperbacks and $5 charge for hardcovers.

Yup, we got another twelve boxes of books and are expecting even more next week. While the selection is still predominately fiction, there's a good choice of cookbooks, children's books (an unbeatable deal at 3 for free, then 25 cents each), and faith-based. I'm really trying for more sci-fi as well.

While we're on the subject of books: it's interesting to me that of all the obscure computer apps that exist, I was unable to find one that will track read books. For fans of voracious writers who's books all have similar story-lines, like Patterson, Grisham, Clancy, and Roberts, a mobile program to note books read and those needed would be a very handy tool.

Now, I read more than most, though not as much as I used to (having three jobs monopolizes a lot of my time), but still, at least a couple books a week. A couple of years ago, I started keeping a book diary: title, author, dates started and finished, summary and what I thought; I have to say, it's something I wish I had done from day one. It's fascinating to look back (even a couple of years) to what I was reading and how each book affected me.

Great thanks to a friend of mine who gathered over 20 boxes of books ~ some faith-based and fiction, but mostly non-fiction: cookbooks, biographies, art, psychology, etc. So, if you're looking for new reading material, come by and check out the biggest used book store in Big Bear...

And, huger thanks to my dad for loaning me his 4-wheel drive Jeep for the winter - yippee!

Well, the National Weather Service is forecasting a 'significant' amount of snow in the next 24 hours and recommending everyone ensure they have plenty of bottled water and food stores ~ it's quite a winter we're having. On the bright side, shoveling is good for the arms.

Tiffiny's, like most businesses in Big Bear, is really struggling. I am very blessed to have consistent, generous and kind customers; like Kyle and Nora, and Marlena who have given me lots of firewood; Nicole has helped with my errands whenever possible; Bill, Craig, Dale, Jack, Lisa, Mike, and Mike who each come just about every day despite the goings-on in their own lives. Thank you so much!

This month's tips will be donated to Reading is Fundamental, a program through DonorsChoose.org to provide reading books to pre-k - 2nd grade kids in a high poverty CA school.

This last Tuesday afternoon, I started not feeling well, and by 4:00 was worried I wouldn't make it home if I didn't leave lickety-split. I finally made it back mid-Thursday morning. And today, I'm starting to feel more normal. I apologize if you came by and I wasn't here.

Unlike many Big Bearians, I love it when it snows. Granted, there's some anxiety about making it to work on time and in one piece, but I'm still enchanted by the clean, sparkly-ness of fresh snow.

Anyway, tomorrow is the Poetry Open-Mic, I have no idea what kind of turn-out there will be, we'll just play it by side-head protrusions, as my dad says.

Finally, the mountain is ours again and things are getting back to normal.

Thursday's Singles Night has been converted to Game Night ~ the games begin at 6:00pm. We have a large selection of board and card games.

As Isaac Asimov was born January 2nd, we're showing all Sci-fi this month, and Blade Runner starring yummy Harrison Ford this week.

Since my birthday is only a week before Christmas, growing up I didn't get a party after turning five and my presents had cards that said 'Merry Christmas! oh, and Happy Birthday', so as an adult, I throw myself a party each year.

This year is no different, though the party will be. Amy Fuller will be back around 6:30 pm, we'll have snacky things and a free coffee tasting to determine 'Tiffiny's Blend'.

Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving (and didn't get so caught up with cooking, planning, traveling, cleaning, and just doing that the point of the day missed you).

Usually this time of year, we tend to let things get hectic and out-of-hand ~ this year, I personally, am letting it all go. The decorating, cleaning and shopping will get done as I do it and no sooner. My family and friends are secure in the knowledge that my love is still strong regardless of when I send out Christmas cards...

So, the Harvest Festival was kind of a bust. The storyteller was unable to make it and she was a pretty integral part of the whole thing. I'm sorry if you came by and were disappointed.

Tiffiny's was blessed by the socalmountains.com group on Saturday morning. If you haven't visited their website, check it out, many very nice people...

One of the things I'm thankful for (granted, they're low on the list) are the Coen brothers, so this November our Friday night movies are my Coen bros favorites. This week's movie is 'The Big Lebowski' with Jeff Bridges and John Goodman ~ you shouldn't miss this one!

Last month, Eastside Book Cafe closed, so a couple of groups are meeting at Tiffiny's now. On Monday at 9am the Eastside Yarnsters get together and Wednesday at 9am the Writers group meets.

Well Hank, I don't have a 'contact me' link because I didn't want to get a bunch of spam ~ most of my customers contact me by walking in the door; some call or mail my myspace page. As for the colors of my blog page, this blog is not kept to be read through, but to provide current info about what's going on now. However, as a compromise, I will post the current blog in white and revert to blue when the info is changed ~ I hope that will help.

Due to everyone's economic difficulties, I no longer charge extra for whipped cream or syrup and have reduced the charge for an extra shot to .30. I know it sounds like a small thing, but it can add up over time.

Friday's movie was, surreal ~ if you weren't here, you didn't miss anything.

The Fight for the Light benefit on Saturday was awesome, lots of great music, food and people. Everyone was very generous and loads of money was donated to the Morgan family. THANK YOU!

All tips received October 19th - December 15th will go to Christian Children's Fund to purchase clothes, toys, and books for US children and developmental games for Honduran children.

On October 18th we've scheduled a fund-raising benefit for Ilisa Rae Morgan ~ however, she's going into the hospital tomorrow to be poked and prodded. This week's horror flick is 'The Flesh and the Fiends', loosely based on a true story about two grave robbers in England who turn to murder to provide the creepy Dr Knox with cadavers.

The free spaghetti dinner was great! We fed 54 people here, and the extra food was distributed to local churches and some who came to enjoy dinner.

On September 27th, 3:00-6:00pm, Tiffiny's is hosting a Free Spaghetti dinner for those in Big Bear who are struggling financially. For 30 days, August 24 through September 23, all of our tips are going towards funding the dinner.

We are looking for volunteers to help set-up, cook, serve and clean-up, in one-hour shifts from 2:00-7:00pm. If you're not available on the 27th, come by before then, buy a cup of coffee and throw your change in the tip jar...

Soulkry, Jen, Matt, Jon and Tom, made the drive up from Barstow yesterday with loads of family and friends ~ what awesome people! They began a bit late, but were absolutely worth the wait; cars on BB Blvd were stopping in the road to listen, many zipped in to hang-out for a while.

After packing up, the band hung around to hear Funny Mirrors play. James, Ilisa, Kevin and Rob were in fine form ~ they are always such a blessing.

Acting locally ~ I and several customers are teaming up to provide a hearty meal to some Big Bear residents who are struggling. To achieve this end we're raising money with '30 Days Tips to Feed 150' ~ all of Tiffiny's tips received August 24th - September 23rd will be used to fund a spaghetti dinner on September 26th from 3:00 - 6:00pm. Help is needed with cooking that day, if you're able, please let me know.

The vocalist for Funny Mirrors, Ilisa Rae Morgan is battling cancer. On October 18th, 1:00 - 6:00pm, Tiffiny's is hosting a benefit, Fight for the Light, to raise money for Ilisa to be treated by a specialist in alternative medicine. Lots of help is needed! Thursday, I wasn't feeling well, and closed a bit early, cutting short Singles Night.

Wednesday, we were closed all afternoon while the parking lot was made to look darker.

Monday, the most fantastic contractor in Big Bear, Greg Patterson, installed a sink and toilet in what will soon be a men's room.

Saturday, Funny Mirrors, James and Ilisa Morgan, came to play; however, Ilisa wasn't feeling well so the set was short. Hopefully, when they return on August 9th, she'll be feeling great!

Last Friday, we watched Good Morning, Vietnam! as we couldn't find a copy of Catch-22 in time. We had some new people join us and had a lovely time.

Praise God, we're getting more new customers each day! The Valley received some rain. My mom is visiting and my dad is coming up tomorrow. Jack, my favorite WSJ reading customer, put a Tiffiny's link on his Big Bear MUG (Mac User Group) website; he and his wife Ellyn are regular patrons and I always enjoy their visits.

I have not been keeping up with my blog like I should, but I resolve to change that.

Right now, we have: Cranberry-orange, bran, and blueberry muffins, bundt cake, strawberry tartlets and red/white/blue mini-cupcakes (prices vary but the larger items are only $1.50 and go down from there).

Tonight we (Beth, Jason, John, Rick and I) watched The Patriot. Fantastic flick, I had not seen it before. Next Friday, we will be showing Gallipoli (PG), directed by Peter Weir and starring (again) Mel Gibson (so young you will hardly recognize him). Movie begins at 6:00 pm, so come a few minutes early. Bring your own snacks, but no outside drinks are allowed.

Last night was our tasting and it went really really well. It was a smaller group than Beth and I anticipated, but that's okay. Annmarie and Nik, Kalisha, and Jason were our test subjects and they didn't hold back. Based on their input, we have revised some of our recipes (and ditched others) to ensure your drink is fantastic.

We decided to make Singles Night, a weekly event, Thursdays, 6-8pm.

And, we're still up in the air about movie night ~ so what's your thought? Weeknights or weekends? Movie begins at 6pm or 8pm? Feedback is appreciated...

Sandy came by today so we've got Banana-Chocolate Chip bread, Marble Cake with Marshmallow frosting and Chocolate-Almond bites, in addition to those items from Saturday. We're also offering a healthy alternative, Cup o' Goodness ~ granola, applesauce, acai berries and bananas.

Well, Eastside is closing daily at 2 pm. Anyone know why? I mean, it's great for me, I've had several customers today who are only here 'cause they can't be there, but why would Eastside do such a thing?

Already, I have fantastic customers - Greg, my super-duper general contractor (without whom I wouldn't be open yet), comes by every day to say hi and make sure I don't need any help. Jeff, my most regular customer, has his hands full with several business ventures; he couldn't stay and chat today as his girlfriend just returned from two weeks in London. John, a man of God who I first met at the Prayer Breakfast last month, came in on his way to Starbucks and Karen, an amazing woman who faithfully steps out in whatever way God asks of her, usually stops by in the afternoon. Talking with these two makes me feel so excited by what God is doing in our valley... Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Beth's friends Keith and Janelle who, despite what I said, are both welcome here anytime. My friend from PCBB, Cheryl came by for the first time with her husband Bernie and offered to cover for me occasionally ~ while I said 'no', I'm tired enough that I might just take her up on it sometimes:-).

Beth will be here tomorrow while I'm off to Bible study at Teddy Bear restaurant, come by if you'd like ~ Wednesday mornings 7:30 am, everyone is welcome!

My fantastic baker, Sandy, has been by this morning with Banana Crumb muffins, Cranberry Nut bread and huge, crunchy (yum!) Chocolate Chip cookies. She's also promised her amazing brownies and fruit tartlets very soon. If there's anything in particular that you'd like in the morning, let me know.

For those of you always in a hurry, we will be starting Call Ahead To Go service in the next week or so. You call us at least 15 minutes before arriving, we run your drink out to your car when you get here. Check back or call for more info!

Finally open!

After seven weeks of painting, trimming, cutting, painting, screwing, nailing, cleaning, and painting, Tiffiny's is finally open ~ yippee! It's not actually done, but close enough. I'll continue to make those few little fixes that no one but me will notice, but after I've finished Duma Key by Stephen King. Never in my life has it taken me more than three days to finish any King novel, but this one has waited almost four weeks for me to come back to it between work and sleep. Now I'm ready to discover the mysteries surrounding Elizabeth, Edgar and Duma Key.

I checked out Eastside's awesome web page and decided there's just no point in creating my own ~ I'll go blog. Since Eastside is staying, I've tried to create a different atmosphere and menu ~ there have to be enough coffee drinkers on the mountain for both of us!

I use coffee beans imported from Italy, offer locally made pastries, have a 50" plasma for Nascar, sporting events, movie night etc, free wi-fi, some books (most pb $1/hb $4), comfortable seating and a large conference area for groups. Many of you know Beth from Dr. Kim Hickman's office, she's at the cafe too on Wednesdays (6-11am) and Sundays (6am - 1pm).
